Chapter 6: The Right Hearing Aid System and My Quality of Life
In previous blogs you may recall, I have been describing how Doug Dunker, at Prescott Hearing Center changed my life with the right hearing aid. He addressed my unique hearing loss circumstances much better than I expected. While I am virtually deaf in my left ear; I also suffer damage to the hearing in my right ear.
How it All Began
In fact, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, I was not ready to admit I had a hearing loss. My wife and son were continually telling me that I did not hear well. I accused them of mumbling and expecting me to hear things they were saying from too far a distance. A hearing problem did not seem possible. Negative attitudes about hearing aids fed my denial with fear and misinformation. Increasingly my ears felt like they were plugged up, similar to a pressurized airliner cabin. So finally, I decided to see an ear, nose, and throat physician in 2008.
Hoping for the Best
Nevertheless, I hoped my ears were plugged up by excessive ear wax. Even so, the doctor examined me to see if I had any blockage and said everything looked fine. But he advised that I needed to get my hearing screened by the in-house audiologist.
“You Have Hearing Loss!”
Admittedly, no one wants to receive the diagnosis of hearing loss. The proof was in the tests, and the audiologist showed me the charts. I was cleared for hearing aids and bought my first set within a month. I was amazed that I could now hear things I previously could not, but these aids were not without their problems. The ear molds were made of a hard plastic material but customized for my ears. They filled my entire ear cavity, which caused a lot of sweat and irritation. I have been through several sets of hearing aids since 2008, but I never received the perfect, customized solution for my hearing loss until I met Doug Dunker, of Prescott Hearing Center, in January of this year.
State-of-the-Art Technology and Compassionate Care
From my first appointment and through the entire process with Doug and his excellent staff, Paula, and Carolyn, I felt this was the first time a hearing aid professionals really cared about my individual needs. As I have explained throughout my Journey, we experimented and decided on the CROS system with which I am absolutely thrilled! Through this very modern technology, I can now hear as if I hear excellently with both ears.
“Honey, Would You Mind Turning Down the TV?”
I have waited a long time for my new world of excellent hearing performance. Not only do I hear much better what my wife and grandchildren are saying, but I now enjoy social activities which I previously avoided, when I couldn’t hear well. The other night, for the first time in my life, I said to Sue, my wife, “Honey, would you mind turning down the TV?” She looked a bit shocked, and we both had a good laugh.
