Tinnitus is most accurately described as a ringing in the ears.  This sensation of ringing, buzzing, hissing, chirping, whistling can be intermittent or continuous.  It often worsens when low background noise is low, and most are aware of it at night when trying to fall asleep in the quiet of the night.
